Hospice volunteers provide service based on the specific needs of patients and their families. They may help with housekeeping, laundry, meals and running errands. They may be asked to provide companionship, spiritual support or to help with letter writing, reading and encouraging hobbies. They also provide respite, reassurance, support and listening ears for family members.
All volunteers who have direct contact with hospice patients are required to attend a hospice training session. Heart of America Hospice pays for volunteer training and ongoing education. Some volunteers choose to support hospice through fundraising and other supportive services.
