Closer to Home
As part of a collaborative effort with our patients’ oncologists, HAMC provides a chemotherapy delivery model for those diagnosed with cancer. Our staff takes pride in creating a supportive and healing environment for patients and their families. Cancer patients receive treatment, care, and support from their primary care provider.
Built in 2017, HAMC’s Cancer Care Suite is situated in the acute hospital located on the ground floor. Patients need to check in before treatment at the Emergency Room admissions desk.
Dedicated to You
We are dedicated to bringing the latest treatments to you whether you have cancer, a chronic infection, an immune disorder, or some other condition that requires intravenous therapy.
Staffed by pharmacists and nurses who are highly skilled at administering infusion medicines, our professionals will keep a watchful eye on you during treatment.
Because infusion therapy can sometimes take several hours, our clinic and waiting room are equipped with features to help make you as comfortable as possible, such as big chairs, soft lighting, televisions, tablets, and Wi-Fi.
Oncology and Hematology patients can now be seen in the Specialty Services Clinic at Heart of America Medical Center. Jackie Roberts, DNP, FNP-BC AOCNP visits HAMC on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Patients will need to have an in-person visit with their oncologist for an assessment and a treatment plan before beginning their cancer care appointments at HAMC. With our partnership with Altru Cancer Center, these initial oncology appointments can be completed in Devils Lake.
Dr. Todor Dentchev, MD, and Dr. Daniel Walsh, MD, are available for weekly appointments at the Altru Clinic in Devils Lake. Dr. Dentchev has been appointed as the Chemotherapy Medical Director for Heart of America Medical Center. After the initial in-person visit, you will be able to see Jackie in the HAMC Specialty Clinic or utilize our telehealth options.
Not only can your clinic visits be completed close to home, but you can also receive your chemotherapy or other infusion therapies at the Heart of America Medical Center’s Cancer Care and Infusion Suite.
When you need infusion therapy, providers often prescribe pills when patients get sick. Oral medications work well for a lot of diseases and conditions but sometimes an illness can't be treated with a pill. In these cases, treatment requires something called, Infusion Therapy.
This treatment typically involves giving medicines, nutrition, or fluids intravenously, through a needle or catheter inserted into a vein. Some medicines may also be injected intramuscular (into a muscle) or subcutaneous (under the skin).
Infusion therapy is used as a delivery method for many medications including, but not limited to, antibiotics, chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies (for treatment of autoimmune disorders, COVID-19, and cancers), antiviral and antifungal medicines, pain medications, fluids (to combat dehydration), and parenteral nutrition (a special liquid food mixture given to people who can't eat because of an illness or surgery).
Getting infusion therapy at HAMC means you won't be confined to a hospital or need to travel great distances over the course of your treatment. Between appointments, you'll be able to return home and as your health allows or carry on with your daily activities such as work, or school.
Jackie Roberts, received her Family Nurse Practitioner education from the University of North Dakota, along with her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Jackie has over 20 years’ experience working with the Altru Cancer Center.
The Cancer Patient Care Fund was established in 2017 in conjunction with the opening of HAMC’s chemotherapy infusion suite. Patients who reside in the HAMC service area may apply for up to $1,000 in support in the form of hotel vouchers, airline tickets, grocery gift cards, fuel cards for needed travel, and payment of non-covered medical bills.
Our goal is to make life easier for individuals and families dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
Funds are available to all patients with a financial need who are receiving cancer treatment at Heart of America Medical Center, and area residents receiving treatment elsewhere (Rugby, Towner, Leeds, Maddock or Dunseith zip codes).
